On World’s End Girlfriend~

One thing I’ve always been a fan of is World’s End Girlfriend, a pretty respectable band (though I use that loosely, as it’s just one dude according to wikipedia) that mixes rock, electronic and classical music into this sort of irreverent yet rocking style.

My favorite albums to date are “Hurtbreak Wonderland” and “The Lie Lay Land”, though I’ve got a special spot in my heart reserved for the track “All Imperfect Love Song” from the “Dreams End Come True” album.

Today, I’m going to talk to you about “Seven Idiots”, WEG’s latest album.

I’m not going to do a song-by-song analysis, but I’ll touch on some points: the pre-release tracks ‘Virgin Babylon’. Anne, and Green Greem are fucking amazing. If you can listen to them before actually listeing to the rest of the album, I recommend you so so. It’s got a sort of ethereal feeling to it in the beginning, like you’d see at the start of a fairy tale movie, but there’s some jarring inconsitencies towards the end that make it that much more awesome. It’s subtle and yet jarring. It paints an almost entirely different picture of how ‘Seven Idiots’ will play out. So, like I said, if you can, listen to those three tracks, and then listen to the rest of the CD.

The first track of the CD, “The Divine Comedy Reverse” starts out a lot different than what we expect a WEG album to start out, given his track record, but when it breaks out into the full classical just after the initial tease, you can’t ever think it’s done by anyone else. It keeps going with this electric energy through every succeeding track.

My personal favorite, the one I keep coming back to, over and over again, is ‘DECALOGUE minus 8′ it’s got this feeling like you’re in this jazz club that’s illuminated with blacklights and splashed with gaudy colors and not all the patrons are entirely human. It’s got this dark vitality that makes you want to move… like you’re being chased.

An offhand track mention goes to: ULYSSES GAZER, this aggressive track that plays like an opening to a series. It’s got these mellow pieces, aggressive strings, and this guitar and drum overlay that drives it in and carries it through. There’s this part a couple minutes in where it breaks off into this piano and you’re like “oh shit, okay, I get a break”, and then it’s right back in.

Overall, this is a very strong album and I think it’s deserving of all praise it can get.

Gonzo Radio~

This Will Destroy You~

This Will Destroy You is an indie instrumental rock band out of Texas, much like Explosions in the Sky. Their first album, Young Mountain, is perhaps one of my all-time favorites. I just picked up their second album (According to their Wiki page, it’s actually their first; Young Mountain was supposed to be a demo) This Will Destroy You. I gotta tell you, it’s pretty win. In some aspects, it seems a lot like Explosions in the Sky- it seems this time around they’re a lot more mellow.

Now, don’t get me wrong! mellow is excellent for them, they pull it off well. They’ve got a distinct sound that’s unique. One of my personal favorites (I’ll link a sample) from Young Mountain would be There Are Some Remedies Worse Than The Disease. Truer words were never spoken. Here is a random link to download.

Hurt (the band)~

I’ve been a fan of Hurt for a while. When they came out with their first album, I really didn’t know what I was getting into (haha) but I fucking loved every bit of it. Their first album was was titled appropriately enough; Volume 1. Their second album was … fucking amazing, but their titles are less than inspired; Volume 2. (haha) It’s hard rock; if you’re a fan of the genre I highly recommend them; they’ve got this sort of Tool-style vibe going on, maybe with a bit of… I dunno, Cold and Staind (before either of them decided to go emofag and instead of rocking out with edgy, gritty, sometimes painful lyrics, crooning about how much they suck) grunge and raw emotion.

I’m not a fan of the average sophmore album. From past experience, you just assume that it’s going to suck by default and the thought of shelling out hard earned cash on an album that potentially blows donkey choad makes me want to blow my groceries. – But it’s not at all that bad.

I have some studio cuts from them almost ready for download- the radio station I listen to had them in their studios for a small set, and the links are on their website for download (I’ll be mirroring them) and they’ll be up later. Remember to right-click, save as.

Oh. Music update: If you haven’t heard ‘aozora’ from the Air anime OST, I highly suggest you do so. Immediately. I have never heard a voice so clear, pure, and fundamentally fucking awesome. Very fucking badass.

Musical Dissection: System of a Down~

System of a Down:
I got into them about five years back; my boy Preach had done an AMV to their song Spiders. I’d heard their songs on the radio a few times, but never really had any inclination to check them out. I like to consider myself really discriminating when it comes to my choices in music, and I often hold judgement until I’ve heard multiple songs from any particular band before commiting to buy an album.

I’d really heard Spiders and Sugar after watching Preach’s AMV, and suddenly, I was hooked. Toxicity came out, and I went down to Independent Records and listened to the album. I was feeling vaguely rebellious and anti-government; I was on a jag, godammit, and I wanted to find out more. Fear Factory started that vibe, System of a down did it more intelligently. A interesting and pleasing blend of harsh and mellow, aggressive and smooth, melodic (and yet somewhat symphonic) and cacophanic noise. Some of the subjects are fucking, living, drugs, and other shit, but there’s a strong anti-government element to their shit.

Bring your own Beer (latest Track) Is an exact example of this particular mix of pleasing and rough mix. Like sandpaper and silk, tearing at your ears, adding salve, then doing it again. You can’t ignore it. The pain in your ears is a pain of love.

Their concerts are suitably loud, wild, and aggressive. You can’t help but want to get in there and express yourself as violently as you can.

Nothing conciousness-expanding here; it goes deeper and stays longer; it plays on the emotions, and plays them well.
