Unlimited Blade Works~

April 3rd, 2008

Oh, I admit it, I was waiting with bated breath for Mirror Moon’s Unlimited Blade Works patch. The irony is that the day it came out I had to return to work so I wasn’t able to play it right away, go figure.

LOL DRAMA aside, leaked beta vs final version, they did a good job. Takajun and all the rest of the Mirror Moon staff have my utmost respect and admiration. they really went all out on this one and you can tell.  I’m only the slightest bit miffed that they didn’t include a walkthrough and instead gave a flowchart, but really, who cares? it’s not that big a deal. The official patch is seriously badass and the added voices are a big plus. Plus, if you die, you get a taiga dojo, and that’s almost worth it. No downloadables, but I have a very upset Rin.

Oh Nestor, you beast~

If the Fate arc was about Saber and the servants, then Unlimited Blade Works was about the humans involved; Shirou, Tohsaka, Shinji, etc. Definitely character development throughout the whole arc, though to me it got strained at points. Archer reveals himself to be the bastard I knew he was “You’re a total failure. How’s that working out for you?” and is awesomely GAR. Shirou, despite being a tool, actually starts getting better towards the end. Tohsaka is appropriately cute, too.

There’s one point where the arc diverges and Tohsaka asks Shirou a question that (i believe) ties strongly into the Heaven’s Feel arc, which is still untranslated. I’m eagerly awaiting that arc, mainly because it revolves around Sakura (she makes my heart go pitter-pat) and also because it’s supposed to be the longest arc in the game. Kind of hard to believe, but the longer arcs are more rewarding to me. They explain more about the (lol) Nasuverse.

Utawarerumono~

March 1st, 2008

Haven’t posted in a while; sorry. Been playing Utawarerumono a lot.

Utawarerumono is a story centering around the masked protagonist, Hakuoro, who one day is found by a family of two girls and their grandmother in a nearby forest close to their village. He is badly injured and is soon found to have amnesia, so they take him to their home and treat him until he is well again. Hakuoro is soon accepted into their village where he stays and lives with them. The story’s genre is at first a fantasy-style story with heavy Ainu influence, though later develops science fiction themes towards the end.

Standard fare regarding the story progression, though there’s a few things I’ll mention:

  1. There are no “story” choices per se. You progress through the linear story and things happen.
  2. There are sRPG battles, which really make it worth playing over and over.
  3. Some of the ero scenes are pretty lulzworthy.

I’ll post some screencaps and may even upload a FRAPS of one of the battles. Keep in mind that I’m not so good at sRPGs, so if you see something I’m doing wrong, i’m a noob, don’t lose sleep over it. I’m not.

True Love~

February 7th, 2008

If you haven’t played True Love yet, you’re really missing out. it’s a classic h-game that really brings home the concept of a dating-sim. You… make choices and go out on dates, you build up your stats and try and appeal to the girl that you want. there are easy girls and then there are girls that are hard to get, and then most especially, there are secret, unlock-able girls. there’s even a couple mini-games. As far as plot goes, it’s pretty sparse, but I’m sure this game is entertaining enough to let that slide.

Anyway- True Love. It’s abandonware, so I’ve got it hosted for download. Get it here. I’ve packaged it in a self-extracting rar file. If you can’t get it to run because of a registry issue, run the registry fix. I can’t vouch that it won’t fuck up your computer. then run the game exe again and it should load.

I accept no responsibility for support, this software is hosted with the understanding that if you’re smart enough to download and extract it, you know what the fuck you’re doing, so don’t begin to think I will help if it doesn’t work.

Planetarian ~the reverie of a little planet~

January 29th, 2008

What do you think about the planetarian?
That beautiful twinkling of eternity that will never fade, no matter when.
All the stars in the skies are waiting for you
What do you think about the planetarian?

It’s a kinetic novel from the makers of such famous titles as Kanon, Air, and a lot of other games – Key/VisualArts. Refreshing your memory, a kinetic novel is a bishoujo-game…minus the game part. Its literally a visual novel to the furthest possible extent. You don’t make any choices or anything, the entire kinetic novel is just reading, listening, and watching, so it really is just like a novel in visual form. Another emotional tear-jerker, and just as beautifully done as (IMHO) Narcissu.

Reverie

No download this time, it’s an easy-to-obtain game through legitimate and illegitimate means. insani has an english patch, though I’d say a good portion of the torrents out there already have the patch included. If you can, try and get the voiced version. It’s fucking great. As far as story and music go, it’s pretty standard fare, but I dunno, sweet, annoying, broken little Reverie just … got to me and by the end of it all I went a big rubbery one.

Narcissu~

January 26th, 2008

Narcissu, for me, is one of the clearly defining games for the Visual Novel genre. I mean, come on.

A Visual Novel is essentially a kinetic experience similar to reading a book in your hands, except you get extras. You click instead of turning the pages, you get music and sound effects, sometimes voices, and pictures that all add to an overall experience. As soon as I can maintain a stable connection long enough, I’ll upload a copy of the game for you to download, in the meantime Here’s a consolation prize; the website where you can read all about the game and also download it from there. You fucking love me. I tagged this with ‘Adult Games’ not because of any sex or nudity or anything but because it deals with serious issues and takes a certain amount of effort to understand what’s going on.

Setsumi

Given the same circumstances, I would have answered her, “Would you mind… if I followed you in?”. Fuck returning to 7F, or the other alternative.

On Kana: Imouto~

January 22nd, 2007

So I’ve been playing Kana: Little Sister. I’ll wait until you’ve worked the typical “zomg” statements out of your system.

Okay. I’m only about halfway through the first arc or so. I dunno if I’m even making the right choices in the game. There’re times when the choices seem fairly straightforward like “Help her” or “Don’t Help Her” and then there’s completely obscure choices like “Give her a book with substance” or “Give her a comic book” and then there’s the ones that are fucking hillarious, like, “Comfort her” or “Grab her buns, honk honk!”.

It reads alot like Narcissu. you’ve got a younger sister with chronic illnesses and I think she’s probably going to die, but I don’t know for sure. there’re other people you interact with as well. There’s times when the main character comes off as a prick. total asshat. The kind of brazen stupidity where you wanna stab him in the urethra (the Yumi shit so far), and then there’re times when you can understand and relate to his thought process. There’s times where I laughed my ass off.

Kana is like that, too. There are times when I’m like, “So moe I’m gonna die!” where she’s so cute and adorable that you can’t help but go a big rubbery one over her, and then there’re times when it’s like, “Jesus Christ, girl. Where the fuck is your brains?”

To be honest, I’m so entertained by it that I wanted to play hookey from work and keep playing (:P). I’ll probably do that when Fate Stay Night is finished, but don’t tell anyone. I’m looking forward to playing that. I’ve got a bone for Saber.

I’ve seen the ever-popular image that’s spammed on 4chan from Kana, the coffee spitting image.

If you don’t know, you’re all “What’re you reading?”
“A romance book”
“Oh. What’s it about?”
“A brother and sister that fall in love and have an affair.”

I’d seen that image before I played the game, and was all HA HA OH WOW, but when I hit that part last night I was all OMGWTFOTL. The difference is that seeing an image without anything attached to it is one thing, and spending a couple hours getting into the story and getting to know the characters and suddenly BLAMMO! is something else entirely.

but so far, it’s a good story. If I’m not terribly disappointed by it, I’ll give yall a better opinion.
