XP Until 2010

Posted by: Craig In: Technology

On the 30th of June 2008, Microsoft are stopping PC manufacturers offering the Windows XP operating system as an option on new PC’s to make way for Windows Vista. Microsoft are however, releasing what one would imagine is a ’stripped down’ version of XP which will be supported until June 2010. One slight catch, this version will only be available for ‘low end’ PC’s.

The definition of ‘low end’ you ask?

No greater than 1GB RAM

A Hard Drive of 80GB or less

Processor Clock speed of 1GHz maximum

These maximum specifications are for Laptops and Netbooks only, Microsoft has yet to announce details for Desktop PC’s. I can only imagine this is to try and ‘compete’ with Open Source alternatives, which in most cases are ideal on older hardware. We’ll just have to see how this pans out in reality.

Microsoft have threatened to halt XP being dished out before, PC World are even cashing in on downgrades.

Seems strange that they want to make way for Vista when they are currently working on Windows 7 and I always assumed it may be ready by 2010.

Who knows?

Windows 7 will be ready for around 2010, but that doesn’t mean that they are willing to sit down and wait for it to come out. The unsuccess of Vista has become quite evident, but they have to push it down our throats nonetheless if they don’t want to lose the advantage they have now.
